The TÛRANOR PlanetSolar, the world’s largest solar-powered boat, has just completed the first stage of its journey around the world – a trans-Atlantic journey from Monaco to Miami. The Swiss-designed solar-powered catamaran left Monaco on the 27th of September and docked in Miami just a few days ago, on the 28th of November.
At 101.7ft (31 meters) long and 49.2ft (15 meters) wide, the TÛRANOR PlanetSolar is the world’s largest solar-powered boat. The vessel is completely fuelled by renewable energy, with its solar cells having a 22% efficiency rate. These are the highest rated cells available for purchase on the market, and the cells cover over 500 square meters of the ship. The solar cells are able to power two electric motors which are found in the hull, giving the ship at a top speed of 14 knots. Most notably, the large surface area of solar cells means that the catamaran can travel for up to three full days, even without direct sunlight – any excess energy is stored in a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery.
After this layover in Miami, the TÛRANOR PlanetSolar will head to Cancún, Mexico for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, where it will participate in activities organized by the Swiss government. The vessel is then expected to fully circumnavigate the world in the coming months, visiting San Francisco, Sydney, Singapore and Abu Dhabi, before returning home to Monaco.

Craig Kushen, a Coto De Caza resident, recently came to Revco Solar Engineering looking to save some money on his electric bill. His average bill ranged from $500 to almost $1000. Would you believe that in April he received a bill for $3.89? Well, he did!
Late last year we spoke to Craig about installing an 8.9 Kw system to eliminate 75% of his bill. Our goal was to get him out of the higher tiers so he would be paying 12 cents a watt instead of 30 cents a watt for his electricity.
Craig is receiving a 15% return right out of the gate on his initial investment. He also installed a variable speed pump at the same time his solar was installed to save even more on energy costs. His entire solar system and pool pump should pay itself off in 6 and a half years.

Hey everyone! Hope your enjoying the holiday and wanted to give everyone the opportunity to go green for St. Patty’s Day

A good relationship with your suppliers is very important… but a great relationship with your suppliers can separate you from your competition.
We just finished one of our regular Quality Assurance Field Inspections as part of our on-going dealer agreement with Solar Manufacture SunPower (NASDAQ:SPWRB)
Several times each year, we submit at least three (3) recently completed installations, preferably with customer data for installed systems that have been approved by the utility and building department within the last three (3) months.
If you’re not “in the industry” you might not have heard of SunPower. But for those that are in Solar, it’s well known that their leadership, technology and commitment to customer service also makes them the trusted choice for businesses like Wal-Mart, Johnson & Johnson and PG&E.
These surveys are an example of why they are considered #1 in our industry and why we’re honored to be working with them. Yeah – we love this company.
If you are reading this, and you’re customer of SunPower and/or REVCO, know you’re in good hands. If you’re not and want to be… give us a call! Or, if you’re just reading this for fun, take note of this ancient and reliable practice of customer feedback and surveys. It is one of the keys to long lasting trust, relationships and quality throughout the entire ecosystem of manufacture, retailer and customer – no matter what industry you might find yourself in.
We get a lot of questions on which roofs can support a solar installation. One of the more difficult roofs to install solar panels is a Spanish Clay Tile Roof
Wouldn’t it be nice to never pay an electric bill again and get a check from your utility company? Well, now it’s possible with the recent approval of AB 920.
Legislation passed this October that requires utility companies pay their customers for their surplus solar electricity. In the past if a customer generated more energy than they used the utilities were allowed to receive it for free but now customers will have the option to either get money back or keep the excess electricity.
This should encourage people to conserve because the less energy they use the more money they get from their utility at the end of the year. The Payback on Solar increases quickly just by making small replacements like energy efficient light bulbs and appliances.
The payback rates will be determined by the California Public Utilities Commission and will take effect on January 1, 2010 to be paid out the following year.
We all know that Valentine’s Day is celebrated throughout the world as a day of romance and love. So, what is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Valentine’s Day? Chocolates, flowers, love? Those are the answers I get most frequently when I ask this question.
As a female, I can tell you that most of us love chocolates and flowers – and they will always be accepted. However, if you really want to think out of the box, consider making the move to give Mother Nature a great Valentine’s present by installing a solar system in your home or office.
All in all, this may be a great choice for an unusual and special gift for you, her and Mother Nature. Here is a photo to inspire you!
When we started interviewing firms to give our website a “new look” and get us higher on the ranks on Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc for words like “Orange County Solar Contractor” or “Palm Springs Solar Installer” – one thing was common with most all the website developers. “You really need to blog,” they all told me.
My knee jerk reaction was to tell them all that REVCO Solar has been installing solar systems in California for longer than they’ve been alive – and that should be “good enough” to be #1 on the search engines for such phrases. Well, after some education, I have conceded that longevity and customer base is not necessarily the recipe for today’s marketing tactics. Those things certainly help, I think we all agree, but to get noticed out there in today’s day in age, we need to keep up with the trends of marketing, search engines and social networks. I guess that’s the same in any business, including ours. Over the past 30 years we’ve made many adjustments in our solar practice, so why would the marketing of our service be any different.
Look forward to hearing from me on this platform more. I welcome you to our blog where the staff and I invite you to share our enthusiasm about the savings and efficiency of solar. Here you’ll find a mixture of trends, happenings, and hopefully some personality of our team and services.
Until next time . .
